Using guidance from OFSTED’s ‘Getting It Right From the Start’ research, alongside our growing understanding of schemas, we have reflected deeply on our environments and made meaningful changes that support your baby’s development in the most natural way.
Calm, Neutral Spaces That Support Learning
Recent research tells us that babies thrive in environments that feel secure, calm and predictable. While bright displays can look appealing, too much visual stimulation can overwhelm young children and make it harder for them to focus.
As part of our ongoing investment into quality, we have redesigned our baby rooms using softer, neutral tones and reduced visual clutter. Resources are thoughtfully organised, accessible and carefully chosen. The atmosphere is peaceful and nurturing, allowing babies to concentrate, explore and feel settled.
A calm environment supports emotional regulation, which is the foundation for all future learning.
Recognising How Babies Learn Through Schemas
Babies learn by repeating actions. Dropping objects. Filling and emptying containers. Crawling backwards and forwards across the same space.
These repeated patterns are known as schemas and they are an important part of early development. By deepening our team’s knowledge and investing in high-quality open-ended resources, we have created opportunities that support these natural learning urges rather than interrupt them.
For example, a child exploring trajectory can safely drop and throw appropriate objects. A child fascinated by transporting can move baskets and materials around the room. By observing and responding thoughtfully, our practitioners extend learning in a way that feels joyful and meaningful.
Furniture Designed for Movement and Confidence
Physical development is closely linked to brain development. Babies need space and support to roll, crawl, pull up and cruise.
We have invested in sturdy, low level, cruiser friendly furniture that allows babies to move safely and confidently. Open floor space encourages freedom of movement, helping children build strength, balance and independence.
When babies feel physically capable, their confidence grows in every area.
Heuristic and Loose Parts Play
As part of our improvements, we have expanded our provision for heuristic and loose parts play.
Rather than relying solely on traditional toys, we provide collections of everyday, open ended objects such as wooden spoons, metal bowls, natural materials and textured fabrics. These carefully chosen resources encourage exploration, creativity and sustained concentration.
There is no single correct way to use them. Your baby can investigate, combine, stack, fill or simply examine them at their own pace. This kind of play supports deep thinking and problem solving from the very beginning.
