We are delighted to share the recent refresh of our two-year-old room.
Over the past term, we have invested in new flooring and carefully selected furniture to create a calm, welcoming and developmentally appropriate environment. While you will certainly notice the physical changes, what matters most is the thinking behind them.
Research into early brain development tells us that the first three years of life are a period of extraordinary growth. During this time, children build neural connections through repeated, hands-on experiences. The environment they spend time in plays a powerful role in shaping those connections.
With this in mind, we have designed our continuous provision to be clean, nurturing, creative and curiosity led. Every element of the space has been considered through the lens of how two-year-olds learn best, through movement, sensory exploration, repetition, investigation and meaningful play. Our approach is rooted in research around schematic play. Young children naturally explore patterns of behaviour, such as transporting, connecting, enclosing or rotating, as they try to make sense of the world. By providing open-ended, flexible resources and loose parts, we allow children to follow their own fascinations deeply and repeatedly.
This kind of sustained engagement is where rich learning happens.
Equally important is emotional wellbeing. Two-year-olds are learning to manage big feelings and develop independence. A thoughtfully designed environment supports self-regulation, offering children both stimulating experiences and quieter spaces where they can pause and feel secure. When children feel safe and settled, their brains are free to learn. We believe that the environment acts as a powerful teacher. It communicates to children that they are capable, trusted and valued. It encourages independence, collaboration, problem-solving and imagination, all foundations for lifelong learning.
We are incredibly proud to have invested in a space that reflects our commitment to high-quality early years education. Most importantly, it is a room where children feel calm, inspired and confident to explore.
