This term the children at Tiny Toez @ Cannock have been exploring the lifecycles of both animals and plants.
They began by studying the life cycle of a butterfly. The children had the delightful experience of observing their own caterpillars transform into butterflies, which we later released into our garden.
During this process, they enriched their vocabulary, learning terms such as ‘chrysalis’ and ‘cocoon’.
Following this, they shifted their focus to the life cycle of a plant. They planted runner beans in clear bags, allowing the children to observe the growth of the roots. They learned about the essential needs of the beans, such as water and sunlight, and took pleasure in witnessing the roots grow larger. They have since transferred the beans to pots in the garden, where they will continue to observe their growth, with hopes of harvesting some runner beans come summer.
Currently, they are engaged in a project about the life cycle of ducks. They have been very fortunate to have their our own duck eggs in the nursery, which helps the children understand the origins of ducks. They watched the eggs in the incubator, eagerly waiting for them to hatch.
Now that all our ducklings have emerged, we will spend the next week learning how to care for them before returning to the farm.
